This Community Altar Project invites our community to come together in the thoughtful, often very touching, process of creating a public altar of remembrance for people who have passed. We are seeking community members or organizations interested in creating large box altars made out of shoe-boxes for the community to come together, celebrate and feel the complexities of emotions associated with death.
The process is inspired by alter making traditions in Mexico for the Day of the Dead but community and personal altars of remembrance are created in many traditions all over the world. The project is designed to help us build bridges between the individual and the community, life and death, sorrow and celebration.
We are encouraging all community members construct a "cajita" mini altar out of a shoe-box. Any and all types of materials may be used, paint, paper, photographs, mementos etc.
Please drop of altar to The Compassion Factory by Saturday October 20th.
Share a photograph of a departed loved one to celebrate their memory by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The photographs will be projected at the Gallery, alternating from one loved one to another for all to see.
